Schools shut, flights canceled, 5 dead due to severe rainfall in Delhi

The national capital witnessed severe rainfall on Wednesday evening, resulting in widespread waterlogging and disrupted traffic, leaving citizens stranded for hours. The torrential downpour tragically claimed the lives of a woman and her child, who drowned after slipping into a waterlogged drain in the Ghazipur area. In Gurugram, three died due to electrocution after coming in contact with high-tension wire after heavy rain.

The incessant rainfall also led to a house collapse in north Delhi's Sabzi Mandi area, in which one person was injured. Five fire engines, deployed to the spot, faced traffic congestion while arriving amid heavy rain.

The adverse weather conditions also impacted air travel. Ten flights scheduled to land at Delhi Airport were diverted due to the heavy rain. Eight of these flights were redirected to Jaipur and two to Lucknow. IndiGo has confirmed ongoing disruptions in flight operations.

In response to the relentless rainfall, Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced the closure of all schools in the city on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Delhi until August 5.
