Shock and panic gripped a wedding ceremony in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district after a serving village sarpanch was shot dead in a brazen attack. The victim has been identified as Harbrinder Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party sarpanch of Thathian Mahanta village. The firing took place in full public view, sending guests scrambling for safety.
According to initial information, an unidentified assailant opened fire during the celebration and shot Harbrinder Singh in the head. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The sudden violence at a family function has left the local community shaken, with residents expressing fear over the growing boldness of such attacks. In the aftermath of the shooting, Singh’s brother reportedly chased the fleeing attacker. During the pursuit, he was also shot and sustained serious injuries. He has been described as critically wounded and is undergoing treatment, while police have launched a search operation to trace the assailant.
The killing has heightened concerns as it marks the second murder of an AAP leader within weeks. Earlier this month, Lucky Oberoi was shot dead near a gurdwara in Jalandhar after assailants fired multiple rounds at close range. The back-to-back incidents have raised alarm over the security of political representatives in the state.
