No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Kolkata’s iconic Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the 2nd Hooghly Bridge, will be fully closed to all vehicular traffic for eight hours this coming Sunday, May 31, 2026. According to the official notification, the closure will last from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This temporary shutdown is essential for critical repair and rehabilitation work, including the replacement of stay and holding down cables, as well as bearings, managed by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC).
The closure will affect both the main bridge and its ramps. To minimize public inconvenience, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Shri Ajay Nand, IPS, has outlined a comprehensive traffic diversion plan. Commuters who typically rely on this artery to cross between Kolkata and Howrah are advised to plan their journeys well in advance and prepare for longer travel times through alternative routes.
The diversion plan specifically directs west-bound vehicles from AJC Bose Road and K P Road towards Hastings Crossing to access the Howrah Bridge via Strand Road. Similarly, east-bound traffic coming from Khidderpore will be diverted from Hastings Crossing toward St. Georges Gate Road. Traffic normally using the Y-Point near Ghora Pass will also be redirected toward Red Road to reach the Howrah Bridge.
