Continuous rainfall in West Bengal over the past several days has led to a fresh incident of road subsidence on the Kolkata–Delhi National Highway near Ethora Mod in Asansol. The incident occurred with a loud sound, resulting in a portion of the road—approximately two to two and a half feet wide—collapsing. This led to immediate disruption of vehicular movement on the route.
According to local reports, this is the second such incident in the Asansol area within a week. A similar road collapse had taken place earlier near the Chandrachud Temple area on the same highway, which was temporarily restored after repair work. In both cases, soil movement beneath the highway was accompanied by sudden loud noises, leading to visible cracks and ground caving in.
Following the latest incident at Ethora Mod, highway personnel placed barricades at the site to block traffic and prevent any accidents. As of now, the highway remains closed to all vehicles in the affected stretch. Repair work had not started immediately, and authorities are yet to announce a timeline for restoration of the route.
