Section 144 imposed in Murshidabad after Ram Navami clashes leave shops torched

Fresh communal tensions erupted in Murshidabad on Friday after violence broke out during a Ram Navami procession in the Raghunathganj area, leading to arson, vandalism, and stone-pelting. Around 40 shops were reportedly ransacked, with several set on fire, prompting authorities to impose Section 144 and deploy heavy security in the affected Jangipur and Raghunathganj regions ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The unrest reportedly began near Fultala crossing when a Ram Navami procession, accompanied by loud music and dancing, passed in front of a mosque during Friday prayers. Objections raised by locals led to a heated exchange, which soon escalated into clashes. As tensions intensified, groups allegedly engaged in stone-pelting, while mobs vandalised shops and properties, further aggravating the situation.

Eyewitnesses claimed that some individuals climbed rooftops, hoisted flags, and attacked local establishments, while several residents were assaulted. Among the injured was Abul Sheikh, a municipal employee, who sustained serious head injuries after being attacked with iron rods. He alleged that his motorbike was also destroyed and set ablaze during the violence.

Police said the situation turned volatile following altercations between two groups and confirmed that forces resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the mob. According to Surinder Singh, an investigation has been initiated and search operations are underway, although no arrests had been made at the time of reporting. Security forces have since been conducting route marches and maintaining a strict vigil in the affected areas.

The incident triggered sharp political reactions. BJP leaders alleged the violence was pre-planned, while Trinamool Congress leaders, including Zakir Hossain, accused the opposition of attempting to incite communal unrest ahead of elections. With polling scheduled soon, the violence has heightened concerns over polarisation in the minority-dominated district, where Ram Navami processions have increasingly taken on political significance in recent years.
