Section 144 remains enforced in the violence-stricken Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas for the time being. Authorities have prohibited gatherings of more than four individuals in the area throughout the day. A review is scheduled for the evening to assess whether the restrictions should be extended further. Previously, Section 144 was in effect at five locations, and on Friday, it has been reinstated at four additional places, bringing the total number of restricted areas to nine.
Sandeshkhali, known for its five entry ghats, continues to be under heightened surveillance. Leader of Opposition Subhendu Adhikari was reportedly held at one of these ghats. Despite an interim stay granted by the Calcutta High Court on February 19, halting the imposition of Section 144, the administration is maintaining restrictions across the region, citing the need for security and stability.
