Security tightened across Kolkata ahead of Suvendu Adhikari’s swearing-in as Bengal CM

Security was tightened across several parts of Kolkata on Saturday ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the first BJP government in West Bengal, including at the residence of chief minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari in Chinar Park, Brigade Parade Grounds and outside former chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence. Heavy deployment of security personnel was seen at key locations linked to the ceremony and political leaders amid heightened political activity in the city.

A multi-layered security arrangement involving central forces and Kolkata Police personnel was put in place at Brigade Parade Grounds, where the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected BJP government is scheduled to take place. Security was also intensified at the RCTC Ground, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive before attending the oath-taking programme. CRPF personnel were deployed outside Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat as additional precautionary measures were enforced across the city.

The BJP secured victory in the assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in West Bengal. Supporters of the party from north Bengal and neighbouring states, including Jharkhand, began arriving in Kolkata ahead of the ceremony. Groups carrying BJP flags and raising slogans gathered at different points in the city before moving towards Brigade Parade Grounds to attend the swearing-in event.
