Anil Antony, son of Congress veteran and former defense minister AK Antony, joined the BJP on Thursday. He resigned from all Congress roles in January after his tweet criticizing a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent tremors through the party.
Union ministers Piyush Goyal, V Muraleedharan and BJP Kerala unit chief K Surendran welcomed the former Congress leader to their party for a formal function.
Anil Antony headed the social media cell of the Congress in Kerala before he quit the party following the row over the BBC documentary. The documentary takes a visceral look at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alleged role in the Gujarat riots. Anil criticized the BBC documentary, calling it "anti-Indian bias".
Anil Antony opposed the documentary, saying that placing the views of the British broadcaster above Indian institutions would "undermine" the country's sovereignty.
He took to Twitter and wrote: "Despite major differences with the BJP, I think the views on the BBC, a state-sponsored channel with a long history of prejudice, and Jack Straw, the mastermind behind the Iraq war, set a dangerous precedent for institutions that will undermine our sovereignty."
In his resignation letter, Anil mocked some of his colleagues and mentioned, “I am sure I have my own unique strengths which have enabled me to contribute very effectively to the party in several ways. you are well aware that you, your colleagues and the coterie around the management are only interested in working with a bunch of sycophants and sycophants who would no doubt favor you. This became the sole criterion of merit. we don't have much in common."
