Serial pager blasts injure over 2,700 in Lebanon; 8 killed

People gather outside a hospital, as more than 1,000 people, including Hezbollah fighters and medics, were wounded on Tuesday when the pagers they use to communicate exploded across Lebanon.

At least eight people have been killed and almost 2,750 wounded - 200 of them critically - in a spree of simultaneous detonations of pagers across Lebanon, Health Minister Firass Abiad said on Tuesday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah group put out a statement, saying "Pagers belonging to employees of various Hezbollah units and institutions exploded." Hezbollah, which is banned both by the United States and the European Union is the political and military establishment in Lebanon and is backed by Iran. Hezbollah backs Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in Gaza since October 2023.

According to reports, the pager attacks have killed a son of Ali Ammar, the Hezbollah representative in the Lebanese Parliament. The pager explosions were reportedly caused due to the overheating of lithium batteries caused by a cyber attack.
