No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A quiet Sunday in North 24 Parganas district's Ashoknagar turned into a scene straight out of a thriller when workers renovating an old property stumbled upon two human skulls with several bones buried just beneath the soil, sparking widespread shock and speculation in the local area. The discovery happened near Swamiji Sangha Club in Kalyangarh Bazar where a family was clearing land for a new home on a plot that had sat abandoned since 2013 after the deaths of its previous owners.
As masons started digging, the first skull emerged unexpectedly, followed by more bones—remains that police quickly deemed very old, possibly linked to the site's dark past as the home of a once-feared local figure. Relatives involved in the project, like Ashish Mukhopadhyay, were stunned: "We had no idea about any of this. Our uncle's house was here before—the masons just called us over and pointed out the skulls and bones." The property belonged to Bijan Mukhopadhyay, a CPI(M) leader from well known in the local area whose family home had been locked up for over a decade. Bijan and her wife passed away in 2013 leaving the place untouched until inheritance led to the current renovation. Ashis's wife Mousumi recalls but never suspected anything sinister underground:
Ashoknagar police station officers sprang into action and cordoned off the area and secure the site to prevent tampering. The skulls and bones were carefully collected and sent for postmortem and forensic tests to determine age, identity, and cause of death. Local Trinamool Congress MLA Narayan Goswami links it to the past, claiming, "These might be bodies from the CPI(M)'s shameful history which is surfacing as the soil is dug! another decomposed body found in a nearby water tank back in 2002" As crowds gathered, turning the spot into a buzz of curiosity and fear, authorities urged calm while vowing a thorough probe.
