Severe cold and dense fog to grip Jharkhand; Yellow alert for 20-21 December

A severe cold wave continues to affect Jharkhand, with the state experiencing ongoing chilly conditions and dense fog. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the next two days, December 20 and 21, warning of dense fog and light to moderate rain. These weather conditions are expected to significantly impact visibility and temperature across the state. The alert specifically targets Santhal Pargana, Kolhan, and Palamu divisions, where dense fog is expected to persist and potentially disrupt daily activities.

On December 20, districts including Ranchi, Gumla, Latehar, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Chatra, Palamu, and Garhwa will be affected by dense fog. On December 21, the fog will shift to areas including Godda, Dumka, Deoghar, Jamtara, Sahibganj, Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, and East Singhbhum. Along with fog, light to moderate rain is expected in several districts, with clouds also covering the sky, contributing to the cold and damp conditions. The rain is anticipated to lower temperatures further, adding to the intensity of the cold wave.

Temperature reports show that Gumla recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 5.8°C, while Seraikela reported the highest maximum temperature of 29.1°C. The minimum temperatures in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and Daltonganj were recorded at 9.4°C, 11.5°C, and 8.6°C, respectively. These conditions are expected to persist with further temperature drops expected after the rain, intensifying the cold.

The dense fog and rain are anticipated to cause significant disruptions, especially in terms of transportation. Poor visibility is expected to affect road traffic and air travel, with delays and potential hazards. Additionally, the cold wave and increased humidity levels due to the rain will elevate the risk of cold-related illnesses. The Meteorological Department has urged the public to remain cautious, particularly during the foggy mornings, and take necessary precautions against the cold, especially those with respiratory conditions.
