Kolkata Municipal Corporation board dissolved, Smita Pandey takes charge as 'administrator'
SFI All India General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya was arrested on charges of obstructing government work during a protest against eviction drives near Jadavpur Station Road. He was later granted bail by the Alipore court on Monday afternoon along with other arrested individuals.
The incident took place after bulldozers arrived on Sunday night to demolish hawker stalls near Jadavpur Station Road. Following the eviction drive, hawkers and local residents gathered in protest, and Left leaders, including Srijan Bhattacharya and Sujan Chakraborty, joined the agitation opposing the operation.
As the protest intensified, demonstrators reportedly lay in front of bulldozers to block the eviction process. Police, Railway Protection Force personnel, and central forces were deployed, and the area was barricaded. A baton charge was carried out after the protesters refused to disperse, during which several leaders and activists, including Sujan Chakraborty, were injured.
Srijan Bhattacharya was subsequently arrested on charges of obstructing government work and taken away in a police van. It is reported that multiple cases, including seven legal charges, were filed in connection with the incident, with two being non-bailable in nature.
Even during his arrest, Srijan Bhattacharya continued to raise slogans, alleging that the railway authorities were carrying out illegal eviction without rehabilitation and in violation of legal provisions. On Monday, tension was also reported in Jadavpur as students staged road blockades near Sukanta Setu and Gate No. 4 of Jadavpur University protesting the police action.
