In a significant legal development, the Calcutta High Court has directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay a monthly sum of ₹4 lakh to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their daughter. The order, passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on July 1, mandates Shami to pay ₹1.5 lakh to Hasin Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh to their daughter. This ruling comes after Jahan appealed against a 2023 district sessions court order, which had directed Shami to pay a considerably lower amount of ₹50,000 to her and ₹80,000 to their daughter.
Hasin Jahan had initially sought a total of ₹7 lakh per month for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter from the court. The High Court, in its decision, stated, "In my considered opinion, a sum of ₹1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and ₹2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners." The court also clarified that Shami retains the liberty to voluntarily contribute to his daughter's educational or other expenses beyond the stipulated amount. The court's decision was influenced by Shami's financial disclosures and earnings, which established his capacity to pay a higher amount.
The legal battle between Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan began in 2018 when Jahan accused the cricketer of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and even match-fixing, claiming he had received money from a Pakistani woman. She also alleged that Shami had stopped providing financial support for their family expenses. These serious allegations led to the BCCI temporarily putting Shami's central contract on hold, although the board later cleared him of the match-fixing accusations after an investigation. Hasin Jahan, a former model and cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders, married Shami in 2014, and their daughter was born in 2015.
