Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling his "energy, dynamism and willingness to engage" a "prime asset for India on the global stage." Tharoor's remarks, published in an English daily, come after his return from leading one of the "Operation Sindoor" delegations overseas, which represented India's stance against terrorism. He emphasized that these qualities of the Prime Minister "deserve greater backing" from the nation.

Tharoor, who led the Indian delegation to the United States, Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil, described "Operation Sindoor" as "a moment of national resolve." He underscored the importance of national unity and public diplomacy in the face of global challenges. He particularly highlighted a significant engagement in Washington D.C., where, even with a Pakistani delegation simultaneously present, US officials "echoed our concerns and urging decisive action against terror groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed," as he wrote in his article.

"Operation Sindoor" was a multi-party outreach initiative, seeing members from across the political spectrum travel to 32 countries. Its aim was to present a united front and clarify India's resolute response to terrorism, particularly following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The initiative sought to garner international support and understanding for India's actions.

Tharoor's praise for PM Modi has, however, stirred controversy within his own party. He had previously faced criticism from Congress for being chosen to lead the delegation, with some party leaders like Udit Raj calling him "BJP's super spokesperson" after he reportedly praised the 2015 Uri strike. Tharoor has consistently dismissed such criticism, stating he cannot "dwell on it" and would address his colleagues upon his return to India.
