Complaints of alleged illegal extortion surfaced at the CA Market in Salt Lake while Dr. Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay was visiting the area. According to shopkeepers, an individual identified as Chandan Bhattacharya had allegedly been collecting money from traders operating within the market premises. After receiving multiple complaints from shopkeepers, Dr. Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay reportedly summoned Chandan Bhattacharya for questioning regarding the allegations made against him. During the questioning, it allegedly emerged that money had been collected from traders by invoking the name of the Councilor of Ward No. 39.
The incident triggered significant tension and outrage among traders and local residents present at the market. Following the allegations and the growing unrest, Dr. Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay contacted Bidhannagar North Police and requested police intervention at the spot. Police personnel arrived at the market shortly afterward and took Chandan Bhattacharya into custody for further questioning regarding the allegations of extortion raised by the shopkeepers.
As police escorted the accused from the market premises, an agitated crowd gathered at the scene and allegedly attempted to attack him physically. Witnesses stated that several people in the crowd struck the accused with kicks and punches before police personnel intervened and removed him from the area. Bidhannagar North Police subsequently took the accused to the police station and initiated further legal proceedings in connection with the allegations.
