Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy announced on Tuesday that the government would issue strict instructions to all shops and commercial establishments, making it mandatory to display their names in Tamil. The move comes amid an ongoing language debate, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting Tamil in the Union Territory.
The announcement was made in response to a plea by Independent legislator G Nehru alias Kuppusamy, who raised the issue during Zero Hour in the Puducherry Assembly. The MLA insisted that no leniency should be shown to businesses failing to comply, urging the government to issue clear directives to uphold the Tamil language's dignity.
Chief Minister Rangasamy assured the House that a government circular would soon be issued, making it compulsory for shop owners to include Tamil versions of their establishment names on signboards. He also revealed that the government had decided to include Tamil translations in all invitations for government department functions as a mark of respect for the language.
"This is out of love and respect for Tamil," said the Chief Minister, reinforcing the government's commitment to language preservation. The decision aligns with similar moves in other Tamil-speaking regions, where local governments have taken steps to protect linguistic heritage.
Meanwhile, during the Question Hour, Public Works and Fisheries Minister K Lakshminarayanan informed the Assembly about the state’s efforts to combat sea erosion along the 24-km Puducherry coastline. He highlighted that the government plans to place boulders along the stretch to prevent further damage, estimating that ₹1,000 crore would be needed for the project. Funds are expected to be sourced from the central government for its execution.
The Tamil signage directive is expected to spark debate among business owners and linguistic groups, but the government maintains that promoting Tamil is essential for cultural identity. The administration is set to enforce the rule strictly, ensuring widespread compliance across Puducherry.
