Cricket fans at Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens held their breath today as Indian captain Shubman Gill, fresh into his innings, suddenly clutched his neck after a crisp boundary off just three balls, forcing him to retire hurt on a gritty four and handing the Proteas an unexpected edge.
The 26-year-old opener was retired hurt with neck spasm after facing just three deliveries on the 2nd day of the ongoing first Test match against South Africa until the spasm in his neck turned the session into a tense medical watch. After hitting a boundary the physio rushed to him at the ground and after a few moments, Gill walked off the field, retired hurt on four runs
BCCI said the middle-order batter is being monitored by its medical team and a decision on his participation for the remainder of the second day’s play will be taken later. “Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," BCCI posted on X.
