The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a shutdown in Siliguri today to protest against alleged atrocities on Hindus. The shutdown had a significant impact across the city from early morning. Most privately operated public buses remained off the roads, while a limited number of government buses and some private vehicles continued to operate.
In the Matigara area of Siliguri, unrest was reported during the shutdown. To maintain order, police forces were heavily deployed throughout the city with patrols stationed at all major intersections. Police conducted regular patrols within the Matigara police station jurisdiction to monitor the situation.
During the shutdown, multiple reports emerged of physical altercations between shutdown supporters and police. In several locations, police used mild lathi-charge to disperse demonstrators. Authorities detained more than 10 individuals believed to be participating in the shutdown across various parts of the city. The police presence remains strong to prevent further disturbances.
