Sandeshkhali erupts in violence following elections; section 144 imposed
The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections will take place on May 20, involving 49 constituencies across eight states and union territories. To facilitate the election process, schools and colleges in these areas will be closed as they serve as polling stations and to ensure security during this critical period. This phase sees significant participation from constituencies in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
The Election Commission has confirmed that 695 candidates will compete in this phase, narrowed down from 1,586 nominations. Among these candidates, only 82 are women, as reported by the Association for Democratic Reforms. The closure of educational institutions aims to minimize disruptions and maintain order during the elections, which are crucial for the democratic process.
