The police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the mysterious death of a female home guard at the Canning Police Station. Parampara Sengupta, Additional Superintendent of Police of the Baruipur Police District, has been appointed as the head of the six-member team to investigate the case.
According to police sources, the sub-inspector of Canning Police Station, Sayan Bhattacharya, who has been accused of murdering the home guard, is currently absconding. The body of the deceased home guard, Guljan Parveen Mollah, also known as Reshmi Mollah, was found inside the police quarters of the Canning Police Station around 6:30 pm last Saturday.
The family of the deceased has strongly rejected the suicide theory, claiming that Reshmi was murdered. A formal complaint has been lodged against the accused sub-inspector. The deceased’s uncle has also filed a separate complaint, alleging that the policeman was romantically involved with his niece.
According to the complaint, when the relationship came to light, the accused allegedly attempted to kill Reshmi and make it appear as a case of suicide. The accused policeman has not yet been traced, and tension has spread in the area following the incident.
