Six people jump from 2nd floor to escape fire in Delhi, sustain injuries

At least six people sustained injuries after jumping from the second floor of a burning building in Delhi’s Nangloi area on February 17. The fire broke out around 9:45 PM in a three-story structure located at Y-655, Mobile Market, Janata Market, under the Jwala Puri jurisdiction. The ground floor housed commercial shops, while the first and second floors were residential. The blaze rapidly spread through domestic items on the upper floors, trapping the residents inside.

According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), three fire tenders were dispatched to the location, and firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 11 PM. Before their arrival, six residents—identified as Pranjal Sharma (19), Preeti Sharma (40), Pankaj Sharma (40), Panav Sharma (18), Vaibhav Sharma (13), and Sweta Sharma (20)—jumped from the second floor to escape the flames. They were immediately taken to Pushpanjali Hospital for medical treatment.

A DFS officer stated that the cause of the fire is suspected to be a gas leak from the first floor, but the exact reason will be confirmed after a detailed investigation. Some of the injured individuals also suffered burn injuries in addition to impact injuries from the jump. Hospital authorities confirmed that all six victims are out of danger.

Eyewitnesses reported that bystanders helped transport the injured to the hospital before emergency responders arrived. A video of the incident, which has surfaced, shows people jumping from the burning building while others on the ground rushed to assist them. The police have taken note of the video and are conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Authorities have begun an official investigation into the incident to determine the precise cause and assess any potential safety violations. Fire officials have urged residents to follow proper safety measures in residential and commercial buildings to prevent such incidents in the future.
