Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called for a nationwide ‘Bharat Bandh’ on February 12 as part of its protest against the recently announced India-US trade deal. The agitation is being organised in coordination with a joint forum of 10 central trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.
SKM leader Hannan Mollah strongly opposed the agreement, alleging that it would have adverse repercussions for Indian farmers. He accused the government of “surrendering before the shrewdness of the US” and said the deal would allow American imports to flood the Indian market, making it difficult for domestic produce to compete. According to him, the agreement amounts to a betrayal of farmers’ interests.
The farmers’ body had launched a campaign from February 4 to 11 to mobilise support across rural regions, culminating in the February 12 bandh call. The protest aims to highlight concerns that the trade pact could severely impact agricultural livelihoods and destabilise the rural economy.
While no official government holiday has been announced, disruptions are likely in several states if local organisations extend support. Markets, banks and public transport services may be affected, though emergency services such as hospitals and ambulances are expected to function normally. Travellers have been advised to check transport schedules in advance due to possible traffic congestion.
