As Cyclone Remal threatens to make landfall, thousands of coastal villagers in West Bengal are being evacuated to safety. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings, anticipating the cyclone's impact between Sagar Island and Khepupara, Bangladesh, around midnight on May 26.
Officials are taking proactive measures to safeguard vulnerable communities. Sumit Gupta, district magistrate of South 24 Parganas, stated that 8,000-10,000 villagers will be evacuated initially, with plans for more evacuations as the cyclone approaches.
The cyclone's impact is expected to be severe, particularly in South 24 Parganas, with wind speeds reaching up to 100-110 km per hour. Red warnings have been issued for districts like Kolkata and East Midnapore, prompting authorities to prepare over 115 multipurpose cyclone shelters in South 24 Parganas and more than 100 in North 24 Parganas.
