SMC demolishes illegal construction at Siliguri’s Seth Srilal Market amid traders' support

Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday demolished an illegal construction at Seth Srilal Market in Siliguri as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorized structures. The demolition followed an investigation triggered by complaints from local traders about an unapproved building extension at the site. The owner had been issued a notice by SMC but failed to take corrective action, prompting the corporation to act.

SMC officials, accompanied by police, arrived at the market and commenced the demolition of the illegal portion of the building. The operation was carried out smoothly, with no reported resistance from the property owner. This marks another significant step in the municipal body’s crackdown on illegal constructions, which have been increasingly targeted in the city as part of a broader urban planning initiative.

The action was met with support from the Seth Srilal Market Traders' Committee. Committee Secretary Khokan Bhattacharya expressed satisfaction with the move but called for similar action against other illegal structures within the market area. He emphasized the importance of maintaining orderly development in the locality to ensure public safety and proper urban management.
