Severe snowfall in the upper regions of Sikkim has resulted in plummeting temperatures and hazardous road conditions, particularly affecting the Tsongmo Lake area. Located 40 km from Gangtok, Tsongmo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, sits at an altitude of 12,303 feet above sea level. This glacial lake, which changes colors with the seasons, has now frozen over due to the ongoing snowfall. The lake is a key attraction for tourists visiting the region, especially during the winter season when its frozen surface creates a unique landscape.
Tsongmo Lake lies along the route to Nathula Pass, a critical military and tourist corridor that connects India with Tibet. The region is known for its extreme weather conditions during the winter months, which often include heavy snowfall, strong winds, and sub-zero temperatures. The challenging weather this year has made the roads leading to Tsongmo Lake difficult to navigate. Snow accumulation and icy patches have created slippery and unsafe conditions for vehicles, raising concerns about travel safety.
Tourism numbers have surged, with many visitors eager to witness the frozen Tsongmo Lake and enjoy the snowfall. However, road conditions have raised concerns among authorities, who have advised travelers to exercise caution. In response to the adverse weather, local authorities have increased patrols and deployed snow-clearance teams to ensure the safety of travelers. Despite the ongoing snowfall, which shows no signs of easing, tourism in the area continues, with visitors flocking to witness the natural beauty of the frozen lake and the surrounding snow-covered landscape.
