Sonia Gandhi backs Women's Reservation Bill, read what she said

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressed her strong support for the Women's Reservation Bill, known as the "Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023." During her speech, she emphasized the historical significance of the bill and its personal importance to her.

Sonia Gandhi recalled the early efforts made by her late husband, and said "This is an emotional moment of my own life as well. For the first time, Constitutional amendment to decide women's representation in local body election was brought by my life partner Rajiv Gandhi."

She further highlighted that this initiative was initially defeated in the Rajya Sabha by a narrow margin of 7 votes but was later successfully passed during the tenure of Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.

This legislation has resulted in the election of 15 lakh women leaders in local bodies across the country, fulfilling a significant part of Rajiv Gandhi's vision.
