South Bengal gets temporary weather relief, heavy rain likely again by weekend

A new low-pressure area is developing over the north-western Bay of Bengal, expected to form within the next 48 hours. This will bring a fresh spell of rain to parts of West Bengal and Odisha by the weekend. For now, South Bengal will see reduced rainfall for two days before conditions worsen again.

Weather officials have confirmed that a cyclonic circulation has become active over the adjoining sea regions of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. The circulation is expected to intensify into a low-pressure system, with the primary impact on coastal Odisha. However, coastal districts of West Bengal are also expected to experience moderate impact. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the possibility of rough conditions.

In South Bengal, rainfall intensity has already reduced since Tuesday. The sky is likely to remain partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain forecast in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, and Purulia districts. Thunderstorms accompanied by winds at 30–40 km per hour are expected in some places. On Wednesday, rainfall is expected to decrease further, but weather models indicate a fresh increase in rainfall activity by the weekend.

North Bengal will not see a break in rainfall during this period. From Tuesday to Thursday, all districts are forecast to receive light to moderate showers, with isolated thunderstorms in some areas. From Friday, sporadic heavy rainfall is expected in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts. Rainfall intensity is also expected to rise in other parts of North Bengal as the low-pressure system strengthens.

In Kolkata, maximum temperature is expected around 33 degrees Celsius and minimum around 29 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels remain close to 70 percent, causing discomfort across the city. The sky is likely to remain mostly cloudy, with chances of light rain in several areas during the day.
