Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Swami Prasad Maurya has ignited controversy with his recent statement on X, questioning the traditional depiction of Goddess Lakshmi with four hands during Diwali. Maurya, a member of the UP legislative council, urged people to worship and honor their wives on Deepotsav, claiming they are the true goddesses responsible for nurturing, happiness, prosperity, food, and family care.
The provocative remarks have triggered mixed reactions, with some expressing support for Maurya's perspective and others criticizing him for questioning a Hindu deity. This is not the first time Maurya has sparked controversy with his outspoken views on Hinduism, with previous remarks on Lord Ram and Hinduism itself receiving widespread condemnation.
Swami Prasad Maurya's controversial statement challenging the traditional portrayal of Goddess Lakshmi has fueled a new round of debate and criticism. The SP leader questioned the depiction of Lakshmi with four hands, stating that since no child with multiple hands has been born, he questioned the symbolism. Instead, he urged people to focus on honoring their wives during Deepotsav, emphasizing their role as the true goddesses responsible for various aspects of life.
The remarks have drawn both support and criticism, with Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam calling for a ban on Maurya's public speaking. Maurya has a history of making controversial statements, including branding Hinduism as "deceitful" and "a hoax" in August, which had led to widespread condemnation.
