Four BJP MLAs, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, were suspended from the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for 30 days following disruptive behavior during a session. Along with Adhikari, the suspended members include Agnimitra Pal, Bankim Ghosh, and Bishwanath Kark. The suspension was confirmed after the Speaker, Biman Banerjee, addressed the House, stating that the actions of the MLAs were inappropriate during a motion to adjourn.
According to Speaker Banerjee, the four BJP lawmakers were involved in an incident where official documents were torn and thrown toward his chair. He called the act "reprehensible," adding that such behavior would not be tolerated in the Assembly. He further emphasized that the dignity of the House should be maintained at all times, and any actions undermining this would result in strict consequences.
The decision to suspend the MLAs followed a proposal brought forward by Nirmal Ghosh, which was supported by other members of the Assembly. In his statement, Speaker Banerjee reiterated that all members must behave in a manner that upholds the respect and decorum of the Legislative Assembly. He also stressed that it was necessary to ensure that the functioning of the House was not disrupted by such actions.
In response, Suvendu Adhikari rejected the allegations and denied any involvement in tearing the papers. He also rejected the adjournment, arguing that the suspension was a direct result of the opposition raising issues such as the destruction of idols during Saraswati Puja. Adhikari further stated that the suspension was politically motivated, aimed at suppressing criticism and silencing voices speaking for Hindus.
