No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
The West Bengal government has ordered Kolkata Police to immediately register a special FIR in connection with the massive fire incident in Tiljala that killed two people and left five others critically injured. The direction was issued on the instructions of the Chief Minister after a devastating blaze broke out in a five-storey residential building in the Tiljala area on Tuesday. The state government has also constituted a high-level departmental committee to investigate the incident and examine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
The committee includes senior officials from the MSME Department, Fire Services, Kolkata Police, and the Municipal Corporation. The panel has been instructed to conduct a detailed survey of the incident site and submit its report by 11 AM on May 13, 2026. According to local sources, residents first noticed smoke emerging from the building on Tuesday afternoon, after which the fire spread rapidly through the structure, trapping several people inside. Multiple fire engines and police personnel later reached the area and began rescue and firefighting operations.
Several residents sustained severe burn injuries while attempting to escape the blaze and were admitted to Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute for treatment. Doctors confirmed that two people died after being brought to the hospital, while the remaining five injured persons continue to remain under strict medical observation. Police and fire department officials are investigating the cause of the fire and examining whether adequate fire safety measures were in place inside the building. Firefighters reportedly faced difficulties controlling the blaze because of the congested nature of the locality.
