A major accident took place in the Hatiara-Noapara area of Newtown on Monday morning when a speeding car lost control and rammed into an electric pole. The impact was so severe that the pole broke and collapsed on the road, cutting off power supply in the entire area.
Local sources said the car entered the stretch from the Noapara signal around 8 am. In the rush to escape after hitting passersby, it crashed into the pole. Both the driver and another person inside the vehicle were seriously injured. Locals rushed them to a nearby private hospital in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the two youths in the car were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Police from Ecopark station reached the spot soon after and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the electricity department began repair work to restore power, while the damaged road remained closed for traffic. The closure caused congestion in the area, adding to the morning rush-hour woes.
