No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A devastating road accident on Wednesday morning in Bagnan, Howrah, claimed the lives of two women, who were reportedly crushed under the wheels of a reckless dumper truck. The horrific incident occurred on the Mumbai Road near Ishwaripur village, immediately sparking massive unrest and a protest that temporarily crippled traffic on the national highway.
The victims of the morning tragedy were identified as Moyna Mandal and Meena Mandal, who were related as sisters-in-law. According to family sources, the two women were walking back to their homes after a visit to a hospital, where they had gone to see an unwell relative. Their routine trip turned fatal as they walked along the edge of the busy Mumbai Road, attempting to reach the Deulti market area.
Eyewitnesses and local residents alleged that a speeding dumper approached the women from behind and struck them with tremendous force. The impact threw both Moyna and Meena onto the road, after which the heavy truck’s wheels tragically ran them over. Both women suffered fatal injuries on the spot, resulting in instantaneous death, transforming the roadside into a scene of immense sorrow and outrage.
The proximity of the incident to local habitations meant that news spread rapidly, drawing a large crowd of angry locals who immediately rushed to the scene. Their grief quickly translated into public protest, with residents refusing to allow the bodies to be moved. They placed the victims’ bodies directly on the highway, successfully initiating a blockade that completely halted traffic on the key national thoroughfare for a significant period.
To manage the rapidly escalating situation, a large contingent of police from Bagnan Police Station, led by the Officer-in-Charge, Abhijit Das, arrived at the site. The police force was initially met with resistance and was prevented from retrieving the bodies. It required the intervention of local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership, including Akshay Mandal, to engage with the agitated crowd. Following reassurances and dialogue, the crowd finally agreed to lift the blockade after approximately thirty minutes.
