Sridevi's critically acclaimed film 'English Vinglish' is slated to hit theaters in mainland China on February 24 to mark her fifth death anniversary.
According to distributor Eros International, the 2012 film will be shown on 6,000 screens across mainland China. Directed by Gauri Shinde, the Hindi family comedy drama marked Sridevi's return to the silver screen after a 15-year hiatus and became India's official entry to the 2012 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
English Vinglish tells the story of a quiet, sweet housewife, Shashi Godbole, who endures petty insults from her educated husband and daughter every day due to her inability to speak and understand English. Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reaffirm her worth.
The story was inspired by Shinde's mother who ran a spice shop. “Indian films have gradually established themselves in the competitive Chinese film market, the second largest in the world. In mainland China, we have seen a growing demand for Indian films, especially those that are culturally driven.
"We are thrilled that audiences in China can enjoy this masterpiece featuring one of the most memorable performances of the late Bollywood superstar Sridevi," Kumar Ahuja, COO of Eros International, said in a statement.
The film also stars Adil Hussain, Sumeet Vyas, Priya Anand, Sulabha Deshpande and French actor Mehdi Nebbou.
