Disruption in metro services between Dumdum and Dakshineswar; normal services resume after 2 hours
Four elderly women were killed and 11 others were injured in a stampede near Vanniyambadi in the Tirupattur district of Tamil Nadu. The stampede occurred during a saree distribution event.
According to police, a large number of people had gathered to collect tokens to get free sarees and veshti (vests) distributed by a man identified as Aiyappan ahead of the ‘Thaipoosam’ festival.
Thaipoosam is a festival celebrated by the Hindu Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai. The rush for collecting free sarees and vests was such that it led to a stampede, killing four elderly women.
