Stray dogs attack 2-year-old boy in UP's Gorakhpur

A horrifying incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has brought the perennial danger of stray dogs back into sharp and distressing focus. A two-year-old boy, identified as Sundaram, was brutally mauled by a pack of stray dogs while innocently playing outside his home near Dumri Chauraha on Friday morning. The savage attack, which left the toddler with deep and severe injuries, has traumatized his family and renewed urgent calls for better management of the massive stray animal population in urban and semi-urban areas.

The shocking attack occurred suddenly as a group of four to five dogs pounced on the defenseless child, targeting his face and hands. Eyewitness accounts from local residents paint a horrifying picture: the toddler’s screams for help were drowned out by the dogs' aggression, and the animals refused to release their hold even as villagers rushed to the scene armed with sticks to drive them away.

By the time the child’s parents were able to reach him and scare off the dogs, Sundaram had sustained grievous injuries. He was immediately rushed to the community health center at Pali, where doctors quickly administered first aid and the crucial anti-rabies vaccine to prevent infection.

However, due to the severity of the wounds, particularly those on his face and arms, the child was promptly referred to a private hospital in Gorakhpur city for specialized care. Surgeons there had to perform an emergency operation, requiring ten stitches on his face to close the deep lacerations. The child also received dressing for the serious bite wounds on his hand.

The financial and emotional toll on the family is immense. Ram Pal, the child’s father, stated that the dogs had "tore off flesh from his face and lips." He revealed that the family has already incurred around Rs 70,000 for the initial surgery, and with follow-up procedures expected, the total medical expenses could near Rs 2 lakh. Pal added that with no government assistance received so far, they are being forced to manage the costly treatment by borrowing money.

While doctors have thankfully confirmed that Sundaram is now out of danger, the road to recovery is far from over. Medical professionals have indicated that the toddler will require reconstructive surgery in the coming weeks after the stitches are removed, a necessity to minimize facial scarring and help the child fully recover from the traumatic ordeal.
