Stress and tragedy: IIT Kharagpur student's unfortunate demise

A fourth-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur in West Bengal, identified as K Kiran Chandra from the Electrical Engineering Department, was found dead in his hostel room. The deceased, originally hailing from the Medak district of Telangana, reportedly took his own life, raising questions about the stress faced by students in the prestigious institution.

The tragic incident occurred on the night of October 17, 2023. The local police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Kiran Chandra, a resident of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence, was with two roommates until about 7:30 PM on the fateful day. After his roommates left for academic activities, Chandra was found hanging in his room around 8.30 PM. Immediate efforts were made to rush him to the BC Roy Technology Hospital, where he was sadly declared dead around 11:30 PM, despite the doctors' best efforts. IIT Kharagpur has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the need to understand the underlying reasons for such distress among students.
