Security arrangements for Kolkata North MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay have reportedly been upgraded following the recent political realignment involving dissident Trinamool Congress MPs. Sources indicate that Bandyopadhyay has been provided Y-category security cover, while central security personnel have also been deployed at the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) office in Howrah.
The development comes after 20 rebel Trinamool MPs associated themselves with the NCPI. Sources further indicated that security arrangements for other dissident MPs may also be reviewed and strengthened in the coming days. The enhanced security measures have drawn attention amid continuing political developments involving the group.
The NCPI, which had limited public visibility in West Bengal until recently, has moved into the political spotlight following the entry of the dissident MPs. According to sources, the party intends to focus its organisational activities primarily in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura. The rebel MPs are also expected to support the NDA at the national level despite joining the NCPI.
On Monday, the NCPI launched its official Facebook page and used the platform to welcome the 20 MPs who joined the party. The page featured individual posts introducing the leaders and claimed that the party had become the largest parliamentary force from West Bengal in the Lok Sabha. One post initially described Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar as the party's leader in the Lok Sabha before it was later removed.
Graphics shared on the party's social media platform listed NCPI with 20 MPs from West Bengal, followed by the BJP with 12 MPs, the Trinamool Congress with 8 MPs and the Congress with 1 MP. Based on these figures, the party claimed to be the largest parliamentary group from the state in the Lok Sabha.
