Suicide attempt at Tollygunge metro station disrupts service on Blue line

Kolkata Metro services were disrupted once again on Sunday afternoon after a person allegedly jumped in front of a down train at Tollygunge station, bringing movement on the Blue Line to a halt. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm, affecting trains running from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash (Shahid Khudiram). Authorities suspended services on the down line immediately, with no clarity on when normal operations would resume.

Following the incident, announcements were made at multiple stations asking passengers to deboard trains. Many commuters were left stranded mid-journey, leading to considerable inconvenience despite it being a holiday with relatively lower passenger volume. Several passengers had to wait underground before seeking alternative transport.

As per safety protocol, power supply to the third rail was cut off immediately after the incident to ensure passenger safety. This precautionary step brought train movement on the affected line to a complete standstill. Metro authorities have not disclosed further details about the victim or the expected timeline for restoration of services.

Frequent service disruptions have become a growing concern for commuters. Incidents such as suicide attempts, power blocks and signal failures often interrupt operations, particularly during peak hours. Stranded passengers are then forced to rely on road transport, facing heavy traffic and delays. Many commuters have expressed frustration, alleging a lack of long-term measures to address recurring disruptions.
