Sujit Bose, the former Fire Services Minister of West Bengal, has moved the Calcutta High Court to challenge his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Currently in jail custody, Bose filed the petition through his legal counsel, contesting the central agency's actions in the ongoing municipal recruitment corruption case. The matter is expected to be heard on an urgent basis this Friday in the court of Justice Shampa Dutta Pal.
The arrest follows a lengthy investigation where the ED accused Bose of facilitating illegal appointments in exchange for money. Investigators claim the former minister recommended over a hundred job seekers for positions in the Dum Dum Municipality through illicit means. To solidify their case, officials are currently scrutinizing Bose’s financial records and bank accounts to trace the alleged transaction of significant funds linked to these appointments.
Bose’s legal battle with the ED began earlier this year when he received multiple notices during the assembly election period. At that time, he successfully approached the High Court to delay his appearance, citing his busy campaign schedule. However, once the elections concluded, he was subjected to several rounds of interrogation and searches at both his residence and office, culminating in his arrest on May 11 after a marathon questioning session.
