Shubhman Gill slams maiden Test 200 in 311 balls against England
Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP's state president and Union Minister of State for Education, has taken his grievances against alleged police "overactivity" to the Calcutta High Court. Majumdar personally filed a case on Wednesday, claiming repeated harassment and illegal detention by the police, specifically citing an incident where he was allegedly held overnight at Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters.
The lawsuit stems from two recent incidents involving the BJP leader. On June 19, Majumdar visited Diamond Harbour to meet an injured party worker. He alleged that his convoy was targeted, and his car was vandalized, with the Superintendent of Police of Diamond Harbour reportedly present during the assault but failing to take any action. Fearing for his life, Majumdar subsequently wrote letters to both the state and Lok Sabha Speakers.
The second incident occurred during a protest against the recent Kasba gang rape case. Majumdar had called for a march to the Kasba police station from Gariahat intersection. However, police obstruction prevented the rally from reaching its destination, leading to the arrest of Majumdar and several other BJP leaders, who were then taken to Lalbazar. It was following this detention that he claimed to have been kept all night.
These two events have prompted Majumdar to seek judicial intervention. Appearing before the Calcutta High Court, the BJP state president questioned the police's motives, asking, "Why are the police harassing him repeatedly? Is this harassment just to make him an opposition party?" This suggests a perception of politically motivated targeting by the state machinery.
Majumdar openly expressed his frustration, stating, "The police are overactive. My fundamental rights are being violated repeatedly. I have been detained illegally. I have approached the Hon'ble Court against this. I believe I will get justice." His statements underscore a strong assertion of individual liberties being infringed upon by law enforcement.
