Sukanta Majumdar arrested for blocking road, was stopped from going to Beldanga

Sukanta Majumdar, the State President of the BJP and Union Minister of State, was arrested on Wednesday after a clash with police in Krishna Nagar, Murshidabad. Majumdar was traveling to Beldanga to assess the situation following violent clashes between two groups in the region. These clashes, which have been ongoing, were allegedly sparked by an incident related to Kartik Puja, with accusations of violence against Hindus. Majumdar intended to visit Beldanga to understand the situation firsthand and report it to Delhi.

As Majumdar approached the area, police stopped him in Krishna Nagar, citing concerns over maintaining law and order. This led to a heated argument between Majumdar and the police, with the BJP leader insisting on his right to visit Beldanga as a public representative. Majumdar stated that his visit was not politically motivated, but rather aimed at calming the situation by speaking with local residents. "Being a public representative and Union Minister of State, I wanted to go there, talk to the people, and calm the situation," Majumdar said.

After the confrontation, Majumdar sat on the Krishna Nagar Bridge and blocked traffic for approximately two hours in protest. During this period, the police engaged with Majumdar, but he refused to leave. The police eventually arrested him, stating that his actions were disrupting public order. He was detained on charges of obstructing the police and public officials from performing their duties.

The ongoing tensions in Beldanga stem from clashes between two communities during Kartik Puja. These disturbances have led to heightened security measures in the area, with police and local authorities working to prevent further violence. Majumdar’s visit to Beldanga was intended to assess the situation on the ground, but the police intervened due to the potential for further unrest. His arrest has now become a focal point of political discourse in the region, with both the BJP and the West Bengal government maintaining differing views on the actions taken.
