BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday said that the safe return of BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was possible due to the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shaw, a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal, had reportedly crossed over the international border into Pakistan's territory on April 23 during operational duty in Punjab’s Ferozepur sector.
According to the Border Security Force, Shaw was handed over by the Pakistan Rangers at the Attari-Wagah border around 10:30 a.m. on May 14. He had been in Pakistani custody for nearly three weeks. The BSF stated that the soldier had inadvertently crossed the border while performing his duties and that efforts were ongoing since then to secure his release through established communication channels.
Sukanta Majumdar stated, “Our party and our government were both standing with him. We were also in contact with his wife. This was made possible only because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” He also said that the government remained in touch with the family throughout the process of ensuring his return.
Earlier, the soldier’s family had appealed for intervention, following which political leaders extended support. Shaw has now returned to India and is undergoing standard medical and procedural checks as part of post-repatriation protocol.
