Amid growing tension and fear in Murshidabad following recent violence, State BJP President Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday visited Raj Bhavan, accompanied by victims who were rendered homeless due to the clashes. The delegation met with West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose, who expressed solidarity with the displaced people and assured them of all possible support.
Sources revealed that the Governor took time to speak privately with the affected families, listening to their harrowing accounts of the violence. He reportedly assured them that if needed, he would personally visit Murshidabad to assess the ground situation.
The unrest, which broke out last Friday in Dhulian and Suti over Waqf-related issues, claimed three lives and left dozens homeless. Many residents fled their homes in fear after their houses were allegedly torched. Though central forces have been deployed, the victims say they are still too afraid to return.
Earlier on Wednesday, Majumdar led the displaced group to Bhavani Bhavan to seek an audience with the Director General of Police. Although he ended up meeting the DC South and later Rajeev Kumar, he said the discussions were not entirely satisfactory.
The BJP delegation to Raj Bhavan included senior leaders Tapas Roy and Rupa Ganguly. They joined Sukanta in presenting the grievances of the victims. Majumdar made a strong statement, alleging that mosque loudspeakers were used to incite the violence. “As per the victims, the loudspeaker of the mosque was used to incite riots,” he said.
