Vandalism in Howrah over controversial painting during Durga Puja; 30 arrested
The Supreme Court has granted bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) expressed no objection to his release, ending a period of custody. The decision came during a hearing on Singh's bail plea related to the Delhi excise policy case, with the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, Dipankar Datta, and Prasanna B Varale ordering his release.
Singh was arrested by the ED on October 4, 2023, over alleged involvement in the framing and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy, which was purportedly designed to favor specific liquor entities. The bail plea, initially rejected by a trial court and later by the Delhi High Court, found success in the apex court after the ED withdrew its objection. During the hearing, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that Singh was not initially named in the case and highlighted inconsistencies in witness statements.
The case, stemming from a 2022 complaint alleging irregularities in the excise policy, has seen other AAP leaders, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, arrested by the ED. Singh and fellow AAP members Manish Sisodia and Vijay Nair remain in judicial custody in Tihar jail.
