Surgeons at MR Bangur hospital remove nearly 2,000 gallstones from a 75-year-old woman

Surgeons of South Kolkata’s government-run MR Bangur Hospital successfully removed nearly 2,000 stones from the gallbladder of a 75-year-old woman. The patient, a resident of Regent Park, had been enduring months of chronic stomach pain and vomiting. Despite seeking treatment at various other facilities, her condition remained unresolved until she arrived at the surgery department of MR Bangur, where a complex laparoscopic procedure saved her life this Thursday afternoon.

The surgery was particularly challenging due to the patient’s advanced age and pre-existing health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Under the guidance of Hospital Superintendent Dr. Shishir Naskar, a specialized medical team—led by Dr. Niloy Narayan Sarkar and supported by Dr. Indrani Debnath, Dr. Anubhav Saha, and Dr. Mohibullah—worked meticulously to stabilize her vitals before performing the hour-long operation. The surgical team was also assisted by a dedicated group of anesthesiologists and nursing staff who ensured the procedure's success.

Medical professionals have described the sheer volume of stones recovered as a potential record for the hospital.
