A devastating road accident claimed the lives of seven people, including three women and three men, after their sports utility vehicle (SUV) plunged into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's mountainous Chamba district. The tragic incident occurred near Chhatrund along the narrow Masrund-Hamal transit route when the driver of the Mahindra Bolero lost operational control over the vehicle on a steep curve. According to administrative updates, the impact of the fall was so severe that all seven occupants, consisting of the six passengers and the driver, tragically passed away on the spot before any immediate medical intervention could reach them.
Local authorities revealed that the victims were all residents returning home after participating in a traditional religious ceremony in a neighboring village. The cheerful post-festivity atmosphere quickly turned into mourning as the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and rolled down into the rugged, deep ravine. Given the steep drop and treacherous topography of the Chhatrund area, retrieving the victims required highly coordinated teamwork from multiple emergency services, who were alerted by nearby witnesses.
Following the horrific crash, emergency police personnel, local district administration officials, and nearby residents rushed to the accident site to initiate urgent relief and recovery operations. Rescuers climbed down the difficult terrain to carefully recover the bodies from the mangled wreckage at the base of the gorge. The recovered bodies have been sent to the district medical facility for necessary post-mortem examinations and legal formalities, while authorities have expressed their deep condolences to the grieving families.
