Suvendu Adhikari demands special session from State Govt, says Murshidabad violence must be discussed

West Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has demanded that the state government convene a special session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to discuss the recent communal violence in Murshidabad district. This demand follows Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s request for a special session of the Indian Parliament after the return of an all-party delegation from a foreign visit. The delegation’s trip aimed to highlight Pakistan’s role in supporting terrorism.

Mamata Banerjee has emphasized that the parliamentary special session is important for national interest and to inform the public about the delegation’s findings. Suvendu Adhikari, on the other hand, has raised concerns about the handling of the violence at the state level and urged the calling of a state assembly session. He questioned the police’s failure to act despite complaints and asked, “Why were only Hindu homes targeted?” and “Why did Trinamool Congress members create this situation?” according to his post on the social media platform X.

A fact-finding team appointed by the Calcutta High Court submitted a report last Wednesday, stating that the communal violence in Murshidabad was pre-planned and had the support of several local leaders. The report also highlighted the police’s failure to intervene effectively. It stated that during the violence, shops and homes were vandalized, yet the police remained bystanders and did not take any action to stop the unrest.

The Murshidabad violence has been linked to Pakistan-backed terrorists who allegedly entered the Pehalgaon area and carried out brutal attacks. In response to these events, a security operation called 'Operation Sindoor' was launched. The parliamentary delegation’s foreign trip was aimed at exposing Pakistan’s involvement in such terrorist activities on an international platform.

There is uncertainty regarding whether the central government will accept Mamata Banerjee’s request to convene the special parliamentary session. Similarly, it remains unclear if the state government will act on Suvendu Adhikari’s demand for a special assembly session to address the communal violence in Murshidabad and the police’s role during the unrest.
