West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari will not attend the meeting called by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the appointment of the Information Commissioner. Suvendu Adhikari informed the state Home Secretary by writing a letter on Wednesday. Describing this meeting as ridiculous, he said that everything is pre-planned and in such a situation, there is no point in attending the meeting.
The meeting was called by the CM at the Chief Minister's Office located in the Bidhansabha Bhawan at around 12:30 pm on Wednesday. According to sources, the appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner of the state was also to be discussed. State Parliamentary Minister Shobhandev Chattopadhyay as well as the Leader of the Opposition were also invited to attend the meeting.
Suvendu Adhikari said in a letter to the Home Secretary, "I have declined the invitation to join the Committee Meeting for appointing the State Chief Information Commissioner, as because the advertising guidelines for inviting applications have been violated, reducing it to a farcical process to approve an already pre-decided Candidate."
Under the protocol, the chief minister, leader of the opposition and assembly ministers hold a meeting to appoint the chief information commissioner of the state. Following the protocol, this meeting was called in the assembly on Wednesday. In fact, the post of Chief Information Commissioner of the state has been lying vacant for more than 6 months. This year 15 people applied for this post. Four of them were dropped due to age. After this, the process of choosing any one of the 11 will begin. The former bureaucrat and police chief was the frontrunner. The office of the Chief Information Commissioner is also located in the Food Building. After the appointment, the new commissioner will work from there.
