A sudden drop in temperature by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius on Friday morning brought unexpected cold weather to Kolkata, forcing residents to take out their winter clothes again. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 17.7°C, which is within the normal range, while the maximum temperature stood at 30°C, 1.1°C below normal. Humidity levels ranged from 51% to 96%, with fluctuating conditions throughout the day. This drop comes after a winter season that remained mostly mild, with Christmas, New Year, and Makar Sankranti experiencing higher-than-usual temperatures.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold spell will continue on Saturday before temperatures begin rising from Sunday. Forecasts suggest that by Monday and Tuesday, the city’s temperature could increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The next 24 hours are expected to see temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. The drop in temperature has been attributed to sudden atmospheric changes, but officials have confirmed that winter will not extend beyond its usual period.
The seasonal variation aligns with previous IMD predictions that winter in Kolkata would be short-lived this year, with an early departure expected by mid-February. However, the unexpected return of chilly conditions has delayed this transition. Residents who had already stored away their winter clothes have been caught off guard by this brief spell of cold. Meanwhile, weather patterns indicate a gradual return to warmer conditions in the coming days.
