Temperature to drop this weekend in Kolkata, will touch 16°C

Bengal is bracing for a sharp drop in temperature, with the cold wave expected to impact the state starting Friday. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in South Bengal, including Kolkata, is likely to decrease by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, the temperature in Kolkata reached 22.6°C, but it is forecast to drop to around 16°C by the weekend. In districts such as Purulia, the temperature could fall to 10°C, while Bankura and Birbhum may experience temperatures around 13°C. The drop in temperature will be most pronounced at night and in the early morning hours.

The drop in temperature is attributed to clear skies and the arrival of dry northern winds, which are expected to lower the mercury. The daytime temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable, with a mild winter chill during the day, while nights and early mornings will experience significant cooling. Recent weather conditions have included dense fog and overcast skies, though there has been no significant rainfall in the past few days. The foggy conditions are expected to persist, which could impact visibility in several parts of the state.

With the drop in temperature, air travel may face disruptions, particularly due to reduced visibility caused by dense fog. The cold wave is expected to last through the weekend, with temperatures gradually stabilizing early next week. The Meteorological Department has advised authorities to be prepared for potential transportation disruptions, especially during early mornings and evenings when temperatures are expected to be at their lowest.
